Mary Janes' doctors aren't talking surgery anymore. "This is the best exercise program I've ever done!"

Mary Jane says, "You don't have to change your lifestyle, and there's no pressure to lose weight. It's quick and accommodating. 20 minutes and I'm done... I'll stick with it!"
When you have medical conditions like fibromyalgia, osteopenia, and pelvic prolapse, you're going to be very careful about exercise. "Anything that's fast-moving and aggressive aggravates it," says Mary Jane (MJ) Bartee. That's what first appealed to her about slow-motion strength training. She discovered The Perfect Workout after seeing an ad in the paper. Surprisingly, her daughter owns a personal training studio, so it would be quite easy to work out there, but MJ says, "I've seen what they do with kettle bells!" One of the first people to join the Huntington Beach studio when they opened three years ago, MJ really appreciates the safe nature of it. She also likes the twice-weekly 20-minute workouts, the accountability, and the one-on-one training. MJ gives her personal trainer Huntington Beach, Michael, a lot of the credit. "He knows me and knows my condition. He makes adjustments, watches things, and encourages me. He's very understanding and supportive." Michael also keeps track of the amount of weight MJ is lifting, which she doesn't want to know anything about.
All that matters to her are the results, and they've been nothing short of spectacular. Like most people on the program, MJ has more energy, increased strength, and better posture. "From the get-go, I could tell it was going to work for me," she says. "It wasn't exacerbating anything." In fact, not only was it working along with all her medical conditions, it was making them better. Her most recent bone density test showed that her osteopenia is gone. The pain from her other conditions is more manageable, so she doesn't need as much medication now. And her pelvic prolapse has greatly improved, to the point where the doctors aren't talking about surgery anymore. "They're glad to see I'm doing something. I'm 68 years old and I haven't lost any weight, but that wasn't my goal. I'm still teaching part-time, very involved in my parish community, actively participating in the lives of my four grandchildren, and working in my garden. I spent the last two summers in Europe, and I make frequent day trips to visit family in San Diego. I still have the energy to do those things." The Perfect Workout has given MJ a new lease on life, and she plans to make the most of it.
MJ's advice for others, especially women who might be dealing with similar conditions? "You don't have to change your lifestyle, and there's no pressure to lose weight. It's quick and accommodating. 20 minutes and I'm done. Give it a try and give it at least six months. It's something I do for myself, and as long as I'm functioning as well as I am, I'll stick with it."

A Year After Finding The Perfect Workout, Judy says, "My life is forever changed."

Nine months after starting The Perfect Workout, Judy was down 30 pounds, lost seven inches off her waist, and dropped her BMI (Body Mass Index) to 24.
Sometimes life doesn't seem fair. As a teenager, Judy Aoki got hit by a car and broke her femur. Another accident years later caused a compound fracture and broken knee. With so much weakness on her left side, she was forced to use a walker. In the midst of all of this, Judy battled breast cancer in 2012, and underwent chemotherapy. That contributed to kidney, heart, and joint problems. Things were so bad when she discovered The Perfect Workout a year ago, in fact, that she had a handicapped parking sign for her car.

Enter Julie Rocha, trainer extraordinaire at the Huntington Beach studio. "I hadn't heard about slow-motion strength training," says Judy, "but I wasn't at all skeptical. Julie and all of the trainers are so motivating, encouraging, and caring. I never would have achieved these results on my own." Slow-motion strength training is very conducive to people with injuries, since the safe, controlled movements are not hard on the joints. Julie got to work on increasing Judy's strength, being careful with her leg situation. She also helped Judy transform her diet, consuming carbohydrates in moderation and increasing her protein intake.

Nine months later, Judy was down 30 pounds, lost seven inches off her waist, and dropped her BMI (Body Mass Index) to 24, in the normal or healthy weight range. Judy says, "I am so much stronger now in every way. I'm able to do things I couldn't do before. When you're weak, you look older." At age 64, she doesn't worry about tripping or falling anymore, and she walks normally again, including speed walking. And that handicapped sign? It's gone for good. Besides the physical component, Judy believes the emotional benefits are just as important. "For me that 20 minutes twice a week gives me a chance to air my problems. The personal trainer Huntington Beach are listening, they're sympathizing with you. We need that. You get to know the trainers personally. The Perfect Workout is a big family that really cares about you."

Judy understands that emotional connection well. As a cancer survivor, she gives back to others who are in a similar situation as she was a few years ago. She volunteers at the American Cancer Society, and provides pet therapy to patients at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, in the oncology and other departments. The pet therapy dogs help open up the conversation with patients who really need to talk. "It's very rewarding work," says Judy. It's all part of her bright outlook on life. "I would say I've gotten younger and more confident. I feel different about myself. It's a mental thing. It feels good to be strong. I am proof that The Perfect Workout works."

Washington Post says The Perfect Workout's "Slow-motion strength training is hard — and fast."

We'd like to thank the Washington Post for choosing to feature us in an amazing article about Slow Motion Strength Training and the results associated with this scientifically proven method.

According to the article, the Slow-motion strength training studios feel less like a gym and more like a physical therapist’s office. These training studios offer clients more of a personal training in a quiet, no-frills space filled with Nautilus equipment. It's a complete workout in just two short sessions per week.

The article features the high-intensity, low-impact program known as "slow-motion strength training". It means that gradually lifting and releasing weights without the aid of rest or momentum brings muscles to exhaustion (muscle success). It is extremely difficult but it’s also only a total of 20 minutes per session.

Though The Perfect Workout, a California-based outfit founded in 1999, is new to the East Coast, the Slow-motion strength training concept isn’t. The Perfect Workout system cites principles outlined just over 30 years ago by fitness professional Ken Hutchins. In slowing down movements to safely train women with osteoporosis, Hutchins concluded that the technique builds muscle more effectively than conventional weight training.

However, the effectiveness of slow-motion strength training depends on the individual, according to Lee Jordan, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise. But, it offers a broad range of people a safe and viable program. Like high-intensity interval training, Jordan says, it seeks to remove the top barrier to exercise, which is time. Unlike high-intensity interval training (“by its very nature, it’s extreme,” Jordan says), slow-motion strength training is accessible to anyone.

It also talks about the benefits and the good practices of slow-motion strength training. According to the article, practitioners of slow-motion strength training also satisfy their need for cardiovascular activity. The key to an exercise routine is sticking to that routine. And The Perfect Workout's clients say this program works. Clients love to hate slow-motion strength training but they keep coming back because they get results. Slow-motion strength training practitioners also often report better body composition plus lower blood sugar and cholesterol.

Although slow-motion strength training may not be sexiest or trendiest, it gets the job done quicker and safer. Moreover, many clients of an advanced age love the safety along with the added bone strength that slow-motion strength training offers. Lastly, slow-motion training sessions come in several convenient packages. Some packages even help reduce osteoporosis and Type 2 Diabetes.

Justin Dropped 4 Inches Off His Waist!

In 3 months Justin Brunette lost 4 inches off his waist and decreased his body fat percentage by 6.4% with effective nutrition and weekly 20-minute training sessions at The Perfect Workout.

Like a lot of guys in their late 30s, Justin Brunette had gotten so busy with work and family demands, he didn’t have time to work out. Persistent back problems and bone spurs in his elbow made him hesitant to do anything, so he started looking for the best way to get into shape safely. He discovered a book, Body by Science, by Dr. Doug McGuff and John R. Little, that advocates a form of slow-motion, high-resistance strength training. “For me, this was a new approach to lifting weights,” says Justin. “It was different from the mainstream. Completely different. It intrigued me.” It piqued his interest enough that he went out looking for a facility that could accommodate him. None of the regular gyms had it, but research turned him on to The Perfect Workout and he decided to give it a shot.

For Justin, it felt good to start getting back to where he was years ago. After playing baseball for San Diego State, he pitched in the big leagues with the Cardinals and Mets organizations, until Tommy John surgery ended his career. Over time he lost some of the fitness and strength levels he once had, especially since his work as vice president of an insurance investigations firm consumed a lot of his time. The 20-minute workouts twice a week were definitely a draw, but he was skeptical. “I thought doing more would produce more results. I was used to the traditional stuff. But after the first month I really started noticing differences.” Justin has since maxed out on some of the machines, his body fat percentage is down, and he’s constantly increasing the amount of time he can sustain each exercise. The quick progress surprised him. “I wanted to ease back into working out. I didn’t think I’d see the results I’ve had. You’re working on all key body parts. Everything gets stronger together.”

The hard work paid off earlier this year when he took the runner-up spot in The Perfect Workout’s three-month Transformation Challenge. A competitive guy, Justin says, “Once I saw the Challenge, I wanted to win it!” He credits his success to discipline (he hasn’t missed a week since he started at the Huntington Beach studio in January), the slow, controlled movements of slow-motion strength training, and a slight change in diet. Early on he restricted his calories a bit, and now he’s eating more protein, which has helped him add muscle. Justin also has high praise for his trainer. “Michael knows his stuff and really believes in the program. He’s positive, gets down to business, and asks me questions. He takes a personal interest in me.”

When he’s not running his business, Justin enjoys spending time with his wife and three and a half-year old son (with another one on the way), traveling and golfing. Going forward, he wants to continue to get stronger and stay injury-free. “I’m going to keep this in my regimen,” he says. And to anyone else with minimal time to spare who wants maximum results, Justin offers this advice: “Give The Perfect Workout a try. Believe in it and give it a go, especially the first few months. If you’re willing to do that with personal trainer Huntington Beach, the motivation from there is seeing the results.”
